Sometimes through the bad times

Jordyn our nearly four year old grandson had an op last year to start removing a birthmark from his face. They have just been notified the second op is this Tuesday!! This is good news. The first one went with out a hitch and it made a real improvement so the worry is not there this time. The type of birthmark is called a nevus which is quite a dark looking one and they can turn cancerous, so the op is just not cosmetic. We are really pleased that it is happening, especially as he is of overseas to visit the family in England in a few weeks and we were worried he would come up on the waiting list when out of the country. I will have Casey his little brother from Monday night (wish me luck he’s busy), with a friend of my daughter taking over Tuesday morning so I can get some office work done. All going well Jordyn will be home later on Tuesday. Jordyn’s mum is having not such a good time with the pain and once again is off work, it really is becoming a concern and nothing else can be done until she gets into the clinic. She said just before her hand feels really cold, so I suggested a wheat bag, or fingerless gloves.

I read Kate’s entry this morning about how things can seem insignificant when faced with tragedy. I know I had huge tears in my eyes, lump in my throat reading Emily’s entry the other morning. Also phoning the florist yesterday to send flowers to our nephews and his wife’s parents, the florist said to me that she would make sure she would send something beautiful and it hit me again and I got quite choked up. Life does go on however – it can be a real mixture of good and bad and sometimes through the bad times and tears something will happen that make you smile and even in times like this can make you laugh.

We’ve had a couple of lighter moments this week that gave us a grin or a laugh.

- Me finding a box of Thomas the Tank engine linen in our spare wardrobe (stripped of the children’s beds in the move a couple of weeks ago, bought here and forgotten) I phoned our daughter and asked if she was missing bedding. She burst out laughing and told me she was just about to accuse her husband (A Trade Me addict) of selling it all on the net.

- MM coming into the office the other day when I was looking after Devin our five year old grandson. Devin has discovered computers and loves working on the spare one. MM who can barely turn a computer on came in to see Devin ‘writing a book’
“What are you doing Devin?”
Devin replied without batting an eyelid “I’m getting pictures from Clip Art and putting them on Word and writing a book, then I’ll screen print it”
MM’s face cracked me up – he was shocked, amazed and gob smacked.
LOL maybe Devin can give him lessons……

- Later the same day I was driving Devin home (first time to the new house) I got to the cross roads and indicated right, Devin very seriously beside me said “I actually live that way now Nana” pointing to the left. One of those moments when you just can’t help yourself and all I said was “oh shit!!” threw the card into reverse and then headed off to the right. Devin looked at me and asked what I had said. Nothing I replied – grinning. (What’s the bet he will come out with that in front of parents?)

- Today - we have visitors staying here over the next couple of days and I cheated and bought a couple of boxes of muffin mix, whipped up the mixture, added the (tinned) blueberries that came in the box, the mixture went purple, bright purple I asked my daughter who was here if I was meant to drain them first – sure enough….
She told me they would be ok. Then we giggled as we both looked again and thought no too purple and I rinsed the mixture down the drain.

I'm pleased moments like this happen, maybe we have to grab every smile we can.

We have the funeral tomorrow. It's going to be hard. We all knew it was going to happen but it doesn't make it any easier.

About to go and pick up our son from the airport and then go and visit the family. I may not update for a few days, but will try and get a chance to catch up on your blogs at some stage.

What a beautiful treasure the children are. Both for their honesty but for their ability to make us laugh. I am so happy that he will have the op before he goes overseas. I hope it goes as well as the first one did.

Take care of yourself, tomorrow will be very sad but hopefully a great reflection of her life as well. *hugs*

You and the whole family will be in my thoughts and prayers throughout tomorrow but am sure the service will be a celebration of her life and that lots of good memories will be shared amongst her family and friends *hugs*

LOL at the light hearted moments you have had recently especially the computer one :)

I think you're a very 'together' lady - full of love and compassion but still able to appreciate those fun moments in life!

Funerals are never easy, but they are at times enlightening and bring about a sense of peace and togetherness. Treasure those moments to help you through the sadness :)

Thinking of you today.

I worked with a lady who had rheumatoid arthritis and she also complained about cold fingers/hands and started wearing fingerless gloves and reckoned it made a huge difference.
